Cherish Your Children Each and Everyday

As I looked through some of the photos from our recent Spring Break vacation, I began to hear the proverbial thousands upon thousands of words that came from them. This one particularly echoed the word, “Cherish.”

Each of my children are growing at lightning speed and I wish at times the hands of the clock would sometimes just sloooowwww dooowwwnnnn…I read a poem that is so fitting when I’m feeling sentimental. Yes, the house can sometimes be a mess. Yes, I want to pull my hair out at times, but I wouldn’t trade these gifts from God for anything the world has to offer!

I hope you enjoy this sweet poem as much as I did. If you have children, I’m sure you will.

Handprints on the Wall
by
Anonymous

One day as I was picking
the toys up off the floor,
I noticed a small hand print
on the wall beside the door.

I knew that it was something
that I’d seen most every day,
but this time when I saw it there
I wanted it to stay.

Then tears welled up inside my eyes,
I knew it wouldn’t last
for every mother knows
her children grow up way too fast.

Just then I put my chores aside
and held my children tight.
I sang to them sweet lullabies
and rocked into the night.

Sometimes we take for granted,
all those things that seem so small.
Like one of God’s great treasures…
A small hand print on the wall.

Childhood Obesity – An Avoidable Epidemic

“The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake.”
~First Lady Michelle Obama (Let’s Move Campaign)

Obesity in Children

If it were medically feasible, would you consider allowing your 10 or 12 year old to go under the knife for gastric bypass? This is a decision that as a parent, most of us would probably answer, “No.” However, there are a lot of overweight/obese children and adolescents that despite known risks, actually want this procedure, because their life would be so much easier. Less bullying, less stress, and a better life…or so they imagine. For some, this is simply hypothetical. For others, this is a reality.

What’s the deal?

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. What are we doing as a society that has allowed our children to succumb to such a growing epidemic? During a keynote address recently, First Lady Michelle Obama had a message for parents with questionable eating and exercise habits:

“We as parents are our children’s first and best role models, and this is particularly true when it comes to their health,” she said, pointing to research that kids with one obese parent are more than twice as likely to become obese as adults. “We can’t lie around on the couch eating French fries and candy bars, and expect our kids to eat carrots and run around the block. But too often, that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
We always say that the children are our future. Let’s help them MAKE it to the future. There are several harmful long term effects that could be potentially fatal, if childhood obesity is not curbed. The fact is, children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults, and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.

How did we get here?

Well, as mentioned earlier, thirty years ago, most people led lives that kept them at a healthy weight. Kids walked to and from school everyday, ran around at recess, participated in gym class, and played for hours after school before dinner. We prepared home-cooked meals and served reasonable portion sizes and there was always a vegetable on the plate. Eating fast food was rare and occasional treat.

Today, some of our children live and experiences a totally different lifestyle. Walks to and from school have been replaced by car and bus rides. Gym class and after-school sports have been cut. A lot of times, their afternoons are now spent watching TV, playing video games, and on the Internet. Nowadays, parents are busier than ever and home-cooked meals may be far and far between.

As a society, it seems that we have become habitual snackers. Snacking between meals is very commonplace. Whereas thirty years ago, kids ate just one snack a day, now they are trending toward three snacks, resulting in an additional 200 calories a day — and one in five school-age children has up to six snacks a day. Lastly, our food and beverage portions have grown tremendously. They are now two to five times bigger than they were in years past. The average sugar-sweetened beverage was 13.6 ounces compared to today. A lot of kids think nothing of drinking an entire 20 ounces of sugar-sweetened beverages at one time.

What can we do?

There are a lot of online resources that give us options when our goal is guiding our kids (and family, period) towards a healthier lifestyle. Here are just a few:

1. Lead by example. Let your kids see YOU munching on raw fruits and veggies and drinking water instead of soda.

2. Reward with attention, not food. Let’s not reward our children with sweets. It leads them to believe that those foods are “better” than nutritious foods.

3. Make physical activity fun for the whole family. When the weather permits, go for walks or jogs and just have fun together.

4. Take your kids grocery shopping with you (I know, I know…sometimes this can be a headache.). This is a great opportunity to discuss food and nutrition and allow your children to make healthy choices.

We are our children’s biggest influence. Let’s help them develop good healthy eating habits and be proactive with their good food choices versus trying to change some bad habits that could potentially cost them the quality of their lives!

Toddler Breakfast: Mini Banana Pancake Muffins

Here comes another episode of “When Pinterest Becomes Reality“…. Starring Smart & Sassy Mom AKA June Cleaver AKA Martha Stewart. Give me a Pinterest idea that contains 5 or less steps and look out world! I am unstoppable…OK, not really, but I really do get excited and my family does too. They can’t wait to find out if my adventure will be BLAST or a BUST! And trust me, they will tell the truth.

I found this neat little recipe on Pinterest which led me to this site by Once a Month Mom for these amazing little pancake muffins for my little “Muffin” who is super excited about self-feeding right now! They were so easy (about 20 minutes), cheap (only had to buy the Bisquick for $1.39 had everything else at home) and tasty. I made them for the baby, but between my middle daughter and myself, we gobbled up the  poor little baby’s breakfast food! They taste like little pancakes with syrup on them…Yum!

Here’s all that’s to it and don’t forget to follow me on Pinterest. As you can see, I pin some really cool stuff!

You need:

1 cup Bisquick Complete (just add water kind)
1 Banana (sliced and quartered)
2/3 cup syrup
2/3 cup of water

Easy Toddler Food

Preheat your oven at 350 degrees F.

Mix your Bisquick, syrup and water together in a bowl and spoon contents into a lightly greased muffin (preferably mini muffin) pan.

Drop bananas in the mixture and bake  for 12-15 minutes for mini muffins (and 15-20 minutes regular muffin size). Let them completely cool and you can even freeze them for serving later!

Happy Birthday to My Baby!

A year ago today, I was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, weighing in at a WHOPPING 8 lbs 13 oz…she felt three times that heavy while I was carrying her! Whew! Of course it was all worth it. Truly an understatement when I tell you that she brings me so much happiness and extreme joy! From her penetrating big brown eyes to her dimples (like mommy) down to her cute little toes :-) Her temperament is so easy-going and sometimes you don’t even know she’s there! The novelty never fades no matter how many children you have. I get so excited by her ever-changing facial expressions and her new-found words and sounds of the day.

What’s even more exciting is, she took her first step two days ago!!! Yay! This was surprisingly emotional. I guess because SHE. IS. MY. LAST. CHILD. Essentially, every little thing she does means that much more! Not to slight my other two babies, (and yes I call them my babies) but just knowing that I will not be doing this again changes my perspective. I’m 37 and content with the size of my family. We are very comfy right now and just the thought of it taking 17 more years for my husband and I to have the house to ourselves and get our lives back is somewhat frightening, but I’m remembering to be an “in the moment” mom and cherishing each moment with each child.

We’re in a new city, new state, new home with new friends, so her first birthday celebration will be an intimate birthday celebration with just us five, and that’s okay. She won’t remember it but enjoy all the attention and smashing her cake all the same. I’m so thankful for the blessing of three healthy children, and a special, loving husband to make it all possible and today, I’m especially thankful for my baby…

5 Ab Exercises To Do With Your Baby

I use my baby as a weight all the time to do exercises around the house. She’s 20 lbs now and I’m also “bench pressing” her and putting her on my shoulders while I do squats. I’ve wanted to do a video on this, but haven’t had the time. I found a really good one that focuses on abs. What’s adorable about this video, is that Dad is doing the exercises, not mom! Check out other neat things from Dad Labs at www.dadlabs.com. Super cute!

Enjoy the video and let us know what exercices you do with YOUR baby to get back in shape!

Product Review: Plum Organics Baby Food

“Don’t mess with my Plum!”

Ok….I’m in love! Yes, with my sweet baby, but now with her new food. I’m a self-proclaimed foodie and I cannot bring myself to feed my babies just anything. So, naturally, I researched “good organic baby food”. Tons of things came up in the search. Got a little frustrated and then I moved on.

I went to Babies R Us browsing the baby food aisle and saw something. The packaging screamed, “Sheree!! Over here!!” These little pouches were made by Plum Organics. And wait,  it gets even better…they were having a sale!! 10 for $10. I picked one of the pouches up and my heart started racing. No, seriously…I saw broccoli apple…sweet potato corn & apple…pumpkin & banana….spinach peas & pear…green bean, pear & greek yogurt and OMG! I even saw apple, raisin & quinoa!!!!!

I can’t even begin to list all of the delicious combinations they have. the combinations are tasty, healthy and guess what? All organic. Yes, indeedy!

Needless to say, I bought 10 of them and I cannot WAIT to get back to stockpile these babies! Of course, I taste them as we try new ones and every one of them are delicious. I want to eat them myself! That’s my definition of food for babies — Simply pureed food. Where were you Plum Organics when my other two were babies??

So, I went to the Plum Organics website and saw that Babies R Us, Whole Foods and Target sells them!  I even found that Amazon sells them as well, which is great because I do tons of on-line shopping! They even have toddler food with “big kid” food coming soon! *swoons*
My sweet baby loves each of the flavors we’ve tried and hasn’t “pushed my hand away” ONCE! (That’s good for my Little Miss Personality). She is getting the hang of the pouch, which I can really see coming in handy while I’m driving or busy with other stuff.
Just wanted to tell you about this gourmet baby food find. I will do a little research and constantly try to find these on sale. Don’t judge me if you see me squeezing one of these bad boys in my own mouth…Hey! I’m a mom on the go!
