An Unforgettable Experience: 2013 Presidential Inauguration
January 21, 2013. A date that my family will not ever forget – The second inauguration of President Barack H. Obama! The first inauguration in 2009, my hubby and I decided that my one year old (who’s now 5 years old) wouldn’t stand a chance in the harsh winter conditions that year. THIS TIME? We said, sorry Baby Girl (our now one year old) you’re bundling up! We’ve been given a second chance to see our POTUS being sworn in. Let’s go!

There were lots of undeniably awesome things that made our inauguration experience great. From the moment we arrived at our hotel, Washington Hilton, we knew it was going to be a fabulous weekend! We were greeted at the front desk with extreme courtesy and attentiveness. Our room was upgraded to an executive suite and that’s exactly what parents of THREE energetic children want to see… plenty of space for them to be FREE!
When we opened the door, on display was a table of adorable little gifts that made the kids run and squeal with excitement. Yes, even my tween. Caps, purses, activity books, light up pens, and more!

They didn’t forget the parents. They made sure that the hubby and I had a bottle of red and bottle of white (they really did their research) tons of inauguration souvenirs and paraphernalia for us to cherish along with an experience of a lifetime. I thought it was pretty cool that they provided plenty of fruits, veggies and yummy cheeses for us to enjoy!

We had a great time meeting up with my family and seeing old friends, and of course, eating at what I like to call the “gems of DC”. These are restaurants that are unique to DC. I absolutely loathe restaurant chains when I visit other places. I want the full experience when I travel. The next time you’re in the Capitol, please don’t leave without stopping by the famous D.C. landmark, Ben’s Chili Bowl without grabbing a Half-Smoke…or Lauriol Plaza for a Lobster and Shrimp Enchilada…or Matchbox for a Bistro Burger. You can thank me later!

We attended the ceremonial swearing in for President Barack Obama and it was great to be a part of it all.

After now living in below freezing temps for the greater part of the Winter, these temps felt like Spring (okay, maybe not, but it was definitely doable).
The kids not only had an experience of a lifetime, being a part of such a historical event, but because it was such a whirlwind weekend, we missed our opportunity to visit Newseum or Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum before heading back home.
However, we still have e-tickets, so that means that we’ll be back! YAY!!
As parents, you always want your children to have unforgettable memories that leave a lasting imprint on their lives. Thanks to Hilton Hotels, namely Washington Hilton and their “hands down” impeccably attentive staff, we think we actually did just that!
I certainly hope that next time, I get the chance to actually attend on of the inaugural balls. I can only imagine that this is another fabulous event that puts the icing on the cake of such a powerful political weekend.
I’m so thankful for this experience and so grateful that you’re here to share it with me!
This was not a paid advertisement for Hilton Hotels or any affiliates. All thoughts, opinions and excitement are authentic and my very own.
A Fun Family Day at Ellms Family Farm!
A couple of weeks ago, my family and I drove up to the spacious and accommodating Ellms Family Farm in Ballston Spa, NY. The weather was brisk and a bit chilly for me and my “Southern Belle” blood, but once my family saw all of the activities awaiting us at the farm, the cool weather soon became an afterthought. Take it from me, if you are ever in the Capital District of New York and you’d like something fun for all ages, consider the drive up the Northway and make a stop at the Ellms Family Farm and you won’t be disappointed!
Because of my children’s varying ages, whenever we travel, I’m always challenged with making sure no one is bored (for too long at least) and that fun is had by all! I’m so happy to report that we really enjoyed our time there, but more importantly, we enjoyed our time together…as a family. The kids were ecstatic. They actually roasted marshmallows and had S’mores for the first time! They did everything from shooting corn from a cannon to zip lining! Ha! Can you believe that? Zip lining on a farm. I’ve seen it all! LOL
I’ll share our fun day with you through pictures. I hope you enjoy the snapshots as much as much we enjoyed our day!
There are so many ways to celebrate the beautiful gift of Fall, but this was one for the books. Good food, fun, laughs and more! Next time, we’re definitely hitting up one of the Corn Mazes. They are known for their complexity and it soo looks like “scary fun”!
Here’s to marking our map at Ballston Spa, NY. Our next family adventure awaits, but until next time….Keep it Smart & Sassy (KISS),
Freshworks Festival: Birmingham, Alabama
There are few things I love more than a great outdoors festival! During my visit to home in Birmingham, AL, I had the pleasure of attending a festival sponsored by The Jones Valley Teaching Farm. This is an urban teaching farm created to empower the youth to eat smarter, think healthier and live longer. I LOVE THE CONCEPT! Once I did a quick Google search of this, me, my mom, her friend and my baby girl all headed to Downtown Birmingham and we were in for a treat!!! On a hot Saturday, 4 days before the official start of Summer, live music, fresh food and a really cool vibe are all you need to have a good time.
Here is the list of some of the vendors at the festival. My only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to taste everything (try not to drool on your laptop/tablet):
- Biscuit Love: Made-from-scratch biscuits served with fried chicken, sausage gravy or preserves.
- Cantina on Wheels: Tacos.
- Dreamcakes: Cupcakes.
- Farm 255: Italian sausage made with pork from Moonshine Meats, served with a garlic aioli and a golden raisin agrodolce, which is a sweet-and-sour sauce.
- Fresh Off the Bun: Vietnamese tacos.
- Honeysuckle Gelato: Various flavors of gelato made from farm-fresh fruits and produce.
- Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q: Hot links and pimento cheese.
- The Marlay House: Fish¤’n’¤chips.
- Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint: Hickory-smoked pork sandwiches with coleslaw.
- Scott’s Bar-B-Que: Whole-hog pulled pork on Texas toast with cracklings.
- Shindigs Catering: Korean steamed buns with Fudge Family Farms pork belly, Greensboro catfish and Folsom Custom Cuts beef.
- Steel City Pops: Frozen pops made from seasonal fruits and vegetables.
- Stones Throw Bar & Grill: Grilled Bayou L Batre shrimp lettuce wraps with watermelon mint salsa.
In scorching temperatures, we found a few stolen moments underneath the shade to be golden. Here are a few pics from the festival. Enjoy!
Although there were lots of food trucks there, the food was nothing but fresh in every sense of the word. I wish I had more room in my belly to have indulged a little more. It was great to see farmers there, selling their produce as well. Its always great to see farmers getting paid for producing good, quality fruits and veggies. We bought some tomatoes and you could taste the freshness! Needless to say for my first weekend being back at home, it was a great time!

Back to Reality
“Play in the sand; splash in the water; get dirty; get wet. The beach is the only place my mom doesn’t get mad about me doing that stuff. Of course I love the beach!” –Dixie Dykens (age 5)

I had THE most refreshing, drama-free weekend I’ve had in a while. Ok, that’s a stretch…but I had a wonderful time at the beach this weekend. I have found that, while I grew up land-locked, our kids are beach/water lovers. They are so at peace on the shore. They laugh, they smile, they are obedient (for the most part) and really have a blast – to the point of utter exhaustion. That part I LOVE!!! That’s why I found the above quote to be so fitting. They are relaxed because Mom and Dad are relaxed…DUH!
We had the opportunity to go back to Ocean City, NJ. Its only 1.5 hours away from us and we really like it there. Its nothing like our absolute fave – South Beach at Martha’s Vineyard, MA. But it’s nice and family friendly. That’s what we need.
It was the baby’s first trip to the beach and she had a ball!!! She LOVED the sand in her toes. She was completely fascinated with the waves and I even heard a giggle or two. (I love baby giggles). The Big Kid was swimming in a different part of the Atlantic this Memorial Day Weekend. He jet-setted off to Florida to be with his Dad. He, too, had a wonderful mini-vacay. And of course, my middle child, Little Miss Sunshine herself, wanted to close the beach and stay until nightfall!!!
I love our little getaways. They are so refreshing. While it wasn’t a quaint little getaway just for me and my DH, we truly enjoy watching the kids smile. Its euphoric!
I always appreciate the bravery and selflessness of the soldiers that have gone too soon. Fighting for this soil that I’m fortunate enough to live on. I salute you and especially your families for your sacrifice. To my fallen soldiers: I acknowledge you. I thank you and truly appreciated you. May each and everyone of you have eternal peace. God Bless America!
Oh and for those of you that are allergic to the sun….Tomorrow, I’ve got a treat for you!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Whether its a vacation or a staycation for you…relax and enjoy it! You deserve it! As for me and my brood (minus one), we are off to the Jersey Shore!! The Big Kid is jet setting off to the Sunshine State, living the life!
We are hitting up the Jersey scene one last time before we change locale. It should be nice and of course, OVERCROWDED.
Toodles and don’t eat too much barbeque!
BTW, Hope you like my new digs… Exciting things coming your way. As always, thanks for the love!

Our absolute most FAVORITE boutique was having a “Mommy’s Night Out” during our stroll, so we weren’t able to go in and visit, but we still stopped by to say, “Hello!” If you are looking for the most adorable finds for babies, toddlers and kids, stop by bedbugzz… It is the designer savvy mom’s heaven! You will not be disappointed! Kathy, the owner, is the BEST! My girls love her!

J’adore mi amour…
“(Love is finding pleasure in seeing, touching, feeling through all the senses, being as close as possible to a lovable object that loves us.)”
| My sweetie and I | photo credit: @smartnsassymom |
My arrival back to home was with mixed emotions. I was sooo excited to hug, kiss, and smell my babies, it is impossible to describe! Yet, I must say, I was truly getting used to the Parisian way of life. It was a delightful and necessary vacation for my honey and myself. Before I proceed, I cannot stress how absolutely necessary it is to “stay connected” to your spouse. Its an extremely important component of maintaining a healthy, happy marriage. If I can offer nothing else, I will say it again and again, stay connected. Remember what it was like before kids, before career changes, before the inevitable nuances of maintaining a family came along and all of the monotony and under-appreciation of your spouse that sometimes comes along with it. Marriage is work, rewarding, yet work. But if you want to keep fanning those flames, get busy on carving out your “re-connection” time. There’s no better time than the present!!
I’m no expert on marriage, but to understand my appreciation and commitment to the institution of marriage, you have to know a little about my background: I was single parent to my son for five years. I met and started dating my husband when my son was 1 1/2 years old. Our modern, but blended family has come with its challenges, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The uniqueness and fast-paced life of our family has changed so much over the years. Its gone from just the two of us to now, five! It was a different kind of “tough” then when it was just us two. Now, its still tough even with more help. I’m all about the team approach. Working together, and parenting with purpose. I’ve watched a lot of growth take place. The size of my family, the love that my husband and I share for each other and even the size of son’s feet! My son, as awesome and intelligent as he may be, was diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarten*, that alone posed challenges in my life as a parent. Not to mention my life as a newlywed. In addition to the fact that my husband’s career requires lots of travel, I’ve got two little princesses who need me. Oh! Did I mention that my relatives are 889 miles away?
I say all that to say that my life, like that of many other moms, is hectic. We all want to be the greatest wives, the most attentive and loving moms, the best cooks, and the sweetest, most polite guests at those miniature tea tables during [dress-up] tea time. But, before all of it, notice I didn’t say AFTER, or “at the end of the day”–you have to make sure that you and your spouse both feel connected. If you don’t feel it, you can make your marriage vulnerable. We owe it to ourselves to make time — to talk about reasonable ways to regain and recapture what brought you together in the first place.
This, my friends, equates to the necessity for our romantic getaway to Belgium and Paris. I’m not saying it has to be trip around the world. Just something that makes you feel like there is no one else in the world, at that moment in time, but you two. That taking a moment from the iPad, iPhone, laptop, etc. is worth the time you both share with each other.
Another thing I’m a total advocate for is DATE NIGHT! Lucky for us, we came into our marriage knowing and agreeing that this was important — and it still is. Again, nothing big, just alone, adult time that you can share with one another, uninterrupted (if you can help it). Sometimes, we don’t even leave the house, we have a movie and dinner after the kids are put to bed. Its just that simple. I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to spend such uninterrupted time, in such a romantic place, with my sweetie. Its not cliche’. Paris IS for lovers…We made such beautiful memories. I had forgotten how much I love his laugh! We held hands. We fed each other and just loved each other! It was great.

If you’re in a rut, and even better, if you’re not…tell your spouse how much you love them today and that you want some time, together. I’m sure if you tell them how important it is to you, it will happen.
